The Berlin based quartet has only been active with the current line-up since 2007, although they already sound like veterans. Kiryk Drewinski’s frantic lead-guitar parts so often achieve the electricity of Quicksilver Messenger Service’s John Cippolina’s shimmering tremeloed Gibson SG whilst the interplay of Erik Haegert’s lead vocals and his ear-piercing, nimble fingered organ playing along with Kiryk’s supporting harmony recall the sheer class of HP Lovecraft. Yet, when the mood strikes they’re not adverse to two-note fuzz and holler, or stomping R&B.
“We’ve noticed that there are many modern garage style bands that try to sound like one particular single which they like. If those bands put out a record it sounds like you are listening to 12 songs made out of one. I think that comes from listening to all those samplers instead of the original records. We try to be different. We can’t divide the hits or the punk from the other stuff. For us it’s just one thing, like it used to be back then. We very much like the poppy aspect about writing songs but I love the raw garage sound as well. Our rhythm section Jan and Lars are more into 60’s soul and jazz. This gives a good combination I guess. We mostly like the American garage and psych thing. This music just hits you right away. Apart from that there is something romantic about the imagination of being youg, knowing only three chords and rocking out in your parent’s garage.”
"We’re influenced by bands like The Bonniwell Music Machine, Mad River and Iron Butterfly as well as The Zombies, Strawberry Alarm Clock and so many little bands.”
Their astounding debut album is a cohesive and very strong unit that unapologetically fits between purest stinging garage punk and complex late 60s fuzzy psych.
If in the market for proper, heart felt garage/psych that has nothing in common with today’s breed of same ol’ fucked up, doe-eyed punk blues duos and tried and tested ‘70s punk wannabes, The Magnificent Brotherhood are your salvation.
